Weekend RoundUp – Cornett Delights Canadian Crowd As Murrills & Mohamed

6 February 2017

With the SquashTV cameras focused on the Swedish Open there were a trio of other PSA Word Tour titles decided over the weekend, with local hero Samantha Cornett delighting a home crowd in Winnipeg, England’s Adam Murrills doubling up and Egyptian Zahed Mohamed going for four in Pittsburgh.

Cornett is first Canadian Champion in Winnipeg

Samantha Cornett became the first home grown player ever to win the Winnipeg Winter Club Open after she downed Egyptian Zeina Mickawy 3-1 to delight the home crowd and join a list of players including the likes of Emma Beddoes, Dipika Pallikal, Joshana Chinappa and Emily Whitlock to have triumphed at the event.

Mickawy came out aggressive and had Cornett retrieving and twisting and turning in the opening game but Cornett was able to withstand the pressure and squeak out a very important opening game 12-10. The second game continued in much the same manner. Cornett produced some excellent retrieving with some great counter drops and was more aggressive, throwing in a number of momentum stopping nicks off some loose serves.

The third saw her concentration slip and the lead reduced to 2-1, but she regrouped and came out strong in the fourth, taking an early lead which she never relinquished.

Murrills Doubles Up & Mohamed Hits 4
England’s Adam Murrills claimed his second PSA World Tour title in two months courtesy of a 3-1 victory over compatriot Ashley Davies in the final of the Bitar Cosmetics Play Squash McLean Open.

Egyptian Zahed Mohamed meanwhile claimed the fourth PSA title of his career after securing a tense four game victory over talented Malaysian youngster Ivan Yuen in the Capital Pittsburgh Open – PSA M25 – final.

Mohamed impressed as he stormed through the draw, defeating Chris Hanson, Alfredo Avila and Campbell Grayson to reach the decider, in which he commanded the court to claim his first title of 2017.

“I’m really happy to win today, I fought very hard for the title,” said Mohamed.
