Victoria Open Day 2: Top seed Chileshe survives scare

14 July 2022

Men's top seed Lwamba Chileshe avoided a banana skin in his first match at the Victoria Open in Australia, as the World No.92 fought his way back from 2-1 down to beat Hong Kong's World No. 543 Andes Ling.

The Kiwi had appeared in full control after taking the first game 11-7, only for the 24-year-old Ling to take a shocking one-game lead with 11-6 and 11-7 wins.

Staring down the barrel at a spectacular upset, Chileshe was able to wrest control back, levelling the match with a dominant 11-4 win before finally sealing his place in the quarter final with an 11-7 victory in the fifth.

While the top seed may have dodged an upset, others were not so lucky, with four seeds – two men and two women – crashing out.

The biggest casualty of the day came in the women's draw, as Pakistan's No.6 seed Aiman Shahbaz went down 3-0 in just 13 minutes to Yura Choe of South Korea, followed shortly after by the exit of her compatriot, No.7 seed Riffat Khan, who lost 3-0 in 19 minutes to Lam Po Ying of Hong Kong.

In the men's draw, Japan's No.7 seed Naoki Hayashi and Egypt's No.8 seed Shady El Sherbiny suffered early exits after falling to Hong Kong's Ho Ka Hei and Japan's Tomotaka Endo, respectively.

Elsewhere, women's top seed Sarah Cardwell safely navigated her way through to the quarters after dispatching fellow Australian Jennifer Condie 3-0 in 20 minutes.

The quarter-finals take place on Friday July 15 at the Mulgrave Country Club in Melbourne, Australia. Follow the PSA Challenger Tour on *Twitter* and *Facebook* for daily updates from the event.
