Jan van den Herrewegen scored a superb scalp of number eight seed Geoffrey Demont to advance from the first round of the Open International de Squash de Nantes, PSA M10 event.

The Belgian 21-year-old, who has one PSA World Tour title to his name, fought tooth and nail to emerge victorious from the opening game’s tie-break by a 13-11 scoreline. Van den Herrewegen seemed to take heart from that and pressed on to complete a 3-0 triumph over an opponent ranked 36 places above him in the World Rankings.

Gregoire Marche awaits the World No.136 after the number one seed blitzed by Finland’s Matias Tuomi in their encounter.

Eddie Charlton is the sole Englishman to progress through to the last eight after scything through Iker Pajares Bernabeu to book his place in the quarter-final.

The number four seed ground his opponent down early on after mixing up a number of attritional rallies with some expertly placed winners to keep his ambition of lifting a sixth PSA World Tour title alive.

Khawaja Adil Maqbool will face Charlton in the next round after the Pakistani World No.105 saw off Robert Downer in three.
