Tournament of Champions RD1: Gilis, Courtice, Lobban & Shahin Reach Last 32

Four more players made their way through to the second round of action in the women’s draw at the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions as play at the Harvard Club of New York drew to a close on day two.

England’s Julianne Courtice twice fought off a comeback from Malaysia’s Low Wee Wern to ensure she would advance to the last 32 for the first time in her career as she claimed an 11-4, 9-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-9 victory in 57 minutes.

Courtice will face New Zealand’s World No.6 Joelle King on the glass court inside Grand Central Station in the next round.

Australia’s Donna Lobban will face Egypt’s World No.4 Nour El Tayeb for a place in the last 16 after she defeated young Englishwoman Lucy Turmel in four games.

Egypt’s Nadine Shahin and Belgium’s Tinne Gilis were also victorious on day two of the New York tournament as they claimed respective wins over Hong Kong’s Tsz-Wing Tong and USA’s Haley Mendez.
