Tournament of Champions RD1: Aumard, Mickawy, Elaraby & Tomlinson Advance

France’s Coline Aumard, England’s Millie Tomlinson and Egyptian duo Rowan Elaraby and Zeina Mickawy all got their J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions campaigns up and running with wins at the New York Athletic Club.

Aumard faced Canada’s Hollie Naughton and after a close first three games, the Frenchwoman was able to close out comfortably in the fourth to seal an 11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 11-3 win in 41 minutes. As a result she will face World No.1 Raneem El Welily in the last 32.

Meanwhile, Egyptian pair Elaraby and Mickawy both enjoyed strong wins. Former World Junior Champion Elaraby was forced to come from 2-1 down to win 11-2, 7-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-4, while Mickawy overturned France’s Melissa Alves in four games.

Elaraby will face France’s World No.5 Camille Serme in the second round, while Mickawy will go up against compatriot Yathreb Adel for a place in the last 16.

Elsewhere, England’s Tomlinson was able to book her place in the second round of the PSA Platinum tournament courtesy of a 3-1 win over wildcard Marina Stefanoni. Tomlinson will face Hong Kong’s Annie Au in round two.
