Top Seeds Dominate On Day 3 Of JSW Willingdon Little Masters & Senior Tournament

16 January 2024

The JSW Willingdon Little Masters & Senior Tournament continued on Monday, with the top seeds dominating quarter-final action from both the men’s and women’s draws in Mumbai.

In the men’s draw, No.1 seed Abhay Singh continued his faultless progress through the draw, ruthlessly defeating 9/16 seed Vedant Patel in straight games. The World No.73 started strongly, taking the first game 11-5, and never looking backed, walking off court after just 14 minutes of action. Singh will now play No.6 seed Om Semwal after the Indian player came through his bout against the unseeded Arihant KS in three games.

Elsewhere in the men’s draw, No.2 seed Suraj Kumar Chand was made to fight for his spot in the last four, needing 48 minutes to see off the threat of Kanhav Nanavati. Despite taking a one-sided opener 11-1, No.5 seed Nanavati fought back to take the second in a tie-break and level proceedings. An upset wasn’t to be on the cards though, with Chand taking the subsequent two games by 11-7 and 11-3 scorelines. The last player to progress to the semi-finals was Australia’s Remi Young, who claimed a four-game victory over Ranvijay Sidhu.

Meanwhile in the women’s draw, 15-year-old and No.1 seed Anahat Singh made a terrific start to her title quest, easing past the unseeded Dewmini Gallage after just 18 minutes on court. Singh, who is playing in just her third PSA Tour event this week, dropped just 11 points on her way to a straight games victory. The teenage star will square off against compatriot Rathika Suthanthira Seelan in the semi-finals after the No.4 seed defeated Yeheni Kuruppu in four games of fast-paced action.

Japan’s Erisa Sano Herring, the No.2 seed at the 3k event, safely progressed through her quarter-final match against Jelena Dutina, winning 11-5, 11-5, 11-7 in just 17 minutes. Herring will now face No.3 seed Chanithma Sinaly for a spot in the final after the Sri Lankan player came through her respective match in four games. After Sinaly claimed the first game against her Indian opponent Nirupama Dubey, the latter levelled the match by taking the second 11-5. From there though, the higher seed showed her class to work her way through the subsequent two games and keep her title hopes alive.
