Svec Springs a Surprise in Prague Open

Martin Svec scalped number seven seed Jonas Daehler with a 3-1 triumph in the first round of the Prague Open, PSA M5 event to delight the home spectators.

The World No.189 edged out the opening two games in a superb spectacle before Daehler captured the third game after a thrilling tie-break. Svec remained composed though in the final game to see out an 11-9, 12-10, 12-14, 11-8 victory.

“It always feels good to beat higher seeded players, especially as I lost to him in Switzerland last time,” said Svec.

“I’m really happy to get my revenge on home soil. Up next I’m playing the number one seed so I am looking forward to having a good match as I am feeling really good on these courts in front of the home crowd.”

Top seed Sebastiaan Weenink awaits Svec in the quarter-final after his 3-0 win against Julian Tomlinson.

Qualifier Nick Mulvey also came up with a big upset as he bridged a 44-place gap in the World Rankings to eliminate Patrick Miescher. The Englishman dropped the opening game but battled back impressively to capture the result in four games. Mulvey, who is currently ranked at World No.211, will line up against Jan Koukal in the next round after the number two seed held off a tenacious Daniel Mekbib.

Douglas Kempsell is also through after a superb display against Jakob Dirnberger which saw the 22-year-old drop just a handful of points throughout. Benjamin Fischer will be his opponent in the quarter-final after he dispatched Petr Martin.

Talented teenage Israeli Daniel Poleshchuk secured his place in the next stage of the event after beating Jaakko Vähämaa 3-1. His reward is a quarter-final clash with Mark Fuller who saw off Peter Kviecinsky.
