Qualifying Gets Underway at New South Wales Open

The qualifying round of the New South Wales Open, PSA M5 tournament had a few upsets in store as players fought to make it through to the main draw action.

Local player Aaron Frankcomb came up with the biggest shock of the round after he dispatched Israel’s Roee Avraham in four games. The Australian took the first two games before Avraham claimed one back but Frankcomb kept up the charge to earn a hard-fought 11-4, 11-3, 7-11, 11-8 victory.

He will go up against Zac Alexander once the main draw gets off to a start while Chang Wook Woo will meet Rohan Toole after the Korean bested Matt Bridle.

The top qualifying seed Solayman Nowrozi defeated Dominique Ratcliffe to set up a clash with fellow Australian David Clegg and Mohamed Abdelkalek’s walkover against Jesse Keegan sees him through to face Jason Holmes who is granted Lucky Loser status despite his loss to Jong Myoung Park thanks to Jonathan Maloney’s injury.

Park is through to face Joel Luca in the next round while Mithran Selvaratnam and Ruan Olivier’s respective victories over Sam Gould and Shane Kendall sees them through to the main draw action. Selvaratnam will play Ko Youngjo and Olivier meets Ondrej Uherka.

South Korea’s Jaejin Yoo is also through to the next round thanks to his triumph over compatriot Seongyeon Yoo and will do battle with Rhys Dowling in the main draw’s opening round.
