PSA World Championships: Quarter Finals – Preview & How To Watch Live

9 May 2023

The quarter finals of the PSA World Championships continue today in Chicago’s Union Station, with four matches featuring four former World Champions taking place on the stunning all glass show court.

New England No.1 Georgina Kennedy will be in action against Egypt’s Nour El Sherbini, who features in her first match since returning to World No.1

‘The Baby-Faced Assassin’ Karim Abdel Gawad will take on men’s World No.1 Diego Elias for a spot in the semi-finals in the second match of the night. That will be followed by New Zealand’s Joelle King facing Belgium’s first-ever World Championships quarter finalist Nele Gilis.

A familiar clash between England’s Mohamed ElShorbagy and Egypt’s Tarek Momen will close out day seven in Chicago as all the semi-finalists will be decided.

All the action will be available to watch live on SQUASHTV with play starting at 17:30 (GMT-5). Live scores are available here.

More on the World Championships can be found on the World Championships website.

Order of play:

Kennedy v El Sherbini

The first two meetings between these two were heavily one-sided with El Sherbini not giving Kennedy an inch as she recorded two 3-0 wins. Their recent British Open quarter final meeting was very different, with the Englishwoman pushing the new World No.1 all the way to five games and showing a lot more threat in all areas.

However, the World Championships and Nour El Sherbini go hand in hand with ‘The Warrior Princess’ aiming to claim a seventh title this week in Chicago. Having had that scare at the British Open, she may be expecting a similar performance from Kennedy and be much more prepared this time.

Gawad v Elias

In what should be a match full of quality and class, this result could be decided by how the players bodies are feeling as we reach the latter stages of the event.

Elias came through a tough battle with Saurav Ghosal in his last match and admitted he wasn’t moving well at all throughout the contest. With the Peruvian’s silky movement being a big part of his game, and attacking the front corners being a big part of his opponent’s, trouble may be coming for the World No.1

In not-so-typical Gawad style, the Egyptian has recorded three 3-0 wins up to now and looks sharp and focused as he eyes a second World Championship title. He is one of the most skilled players on the tour and when he’s confident, he’s capable of beating anyone. Is another win on the cards for ‘The Assassin’?

King v Gilis

Gilis is yet to claim a victory in five attempts against World No.4 Joelle King, losing the last encounter in New York 3-0. The match before that was at the Manchester Open last year in which King had to dig very deep to hold off the Belgian, winning 15-13 in the fifth game.

The Kiwi has been one of the most consistent players on the women’s tour throughout this season and will look to continue that run as she looks to reach a first World Championship semi-final.

ElShorbagy v Momen

Mohamed ElShorbagy and Tarek Momen will go head-to-head for the 29th time to round out tonight’s quarter final action. ElShorbagy holds a comprehensive advantage over Momen in the previous encounters, with Momen winning just 2 of the last 21 matches.

ElShorbagy managed to defeat bogey player Youssef Ibrahim in RD3, which would have been a big mental boost for the Englishman heading into this quarter final. Momen, however, was in involved in a brutal clash with returning compatriot Mohamed Abouelghar, winning 3-2 in 87 minutes. Could that match still be in the legs of the 35-year-old? But as we’ve seen with both of these players throughout the years, you can never write them off.
