Paris Squash Semi-Finals: Preview & How to Watch Live

1 September 2023

We’re down to the semi-finals in the first Platinum event of the 2023-24 PSA World Tour season – the Paris Squash – today in France as four matches will see two players from both the men’s and women’s draws earn spots in the finals.

Play will start at 19:00 (GMT+2) with all matches on the glass court at Palais de Tokyo and will be shown live on SQUASHTV.

The top two seeds in both draws have made their way through to the semi-finals with Nouran Gohar and Nour El Sherbini looking in top form as they take on Amanda Sobhy and Georgiana Kennedy. Whilst in the men’s draw, Diego Elias came through a 100-minute battle with Joel Makin to advance to the final four, he’ll now face Mohamed ElShorbagy for a final place, while World No.1 Ali Farag faces Paul Coll.

Order of play:

Gohar v Sobhy

World No.1 Nouran Gohar will face World No.5 Amanda Sobhy in the opening clash on semi-finals night. Sobhy is one of the only players on the tour who has captured multiple wins over ‘The Terminator’, the last of which coming in 2019. Since then, it’s been pretty convincing from Gohar apart from the last time the pair met at the CIB Egyptian Open last season where Gohar had to recover from 2-1 down to defeat the American.

Sobhy looks sharp and focused in this event and determined to give a strong account of herself, Gohar will need to be her usual ruthless self if she is to reach the final tonight.

Farag v Coll

Ali Farag and Paul Coll played out one of the matches of the season last season at the Canary Wharf Classic, with Coll coming out on top in four games. The Kiwi will face a completely different Farag tonight however. The World No.1 and World Champion brutally despatched home favourite Victor Crouin yesterday in straight games and looks in fine form heading into this semi-final.

Coll overcame Tarek Momen 3-0 in his quarter final, a player who has not been an easy customer for Coll over the years, so must have taken a lot of confidence from that disciplined and clinical performance, he’ll need to raise his level again if he’s to trouble a different Egyptian tonight. Something he’s done before…

Kennedy v El Sherbini

After her quarter final win over Sabrina Sobhy, England’s Georgina Kennedy will feature in her first Platinum event semi-final tonight, taking on seven-time World Champion Nour El Sherbini.

Kennedy took advantage of the gap left by No.3 seed Hania El Hammamy, who lost to Sabrina Sobhy in the third round. The Englishwoman is yet to score a win over El Sherbini in five attempts, but did score two games off her in the British Open quarter finals, a performance that is sure to be in the mind of both players heading into this final four clash.

ElShorbagy v Elias

Earlier this year, it was ‘The Beast’ Mohamed ElShorbagy who prevented Diego Elias from reaching the World No.1 spot as he defeated ‘The Puma’ in the Black Ball Squash Open semi-finals. Ironically, Elias did then go onto claim the top spot due to ElShorbagy losing to Karim Abdel Gawad in the British Open third round.

These two often bring the best out of each other with quality squash usually the primary outcome. Elias’ measured and thoughtful brand of squash against ElShorbagy’s pace, power and accuracy makes for another intriguing contest between the World No.2 and 3. The head-to-head is all-square at 7-7 between the two, so who will take the lead and reach the final? If Elias is to keep his World No.1 hopes alive in this event, it needs to be him.
