Open Costa Brava: Nghiem Wins Thrilling All-English Final

12 June 2023

The Open Costa Brava Squash Project 2023 came to an end over the weekend with Saran Nghiem winning a thrilling all-England final, beating Asia Harris 11-9 in the fifth game to capture the Challenger 3 title.

Nghiem was also involved in a five-set battle in her semi-final with Hana Ismael, winning in 69 minutes. Harris however needed just 27 minutes to overcome compatriot Keira Marshall 3-0 to reach the final.

World No.92 Nghiem is currently on leave from her studies at Harvard University in USA and started in great style in the final, opening up a two-game advantage over Harris winning 11-8, 14-12 to place one hand on the trophy.

Asia Harris was not going to go down without a fight, she battled back and after saving a match ball at 10-9, she stole the third game 12-10 to breathe more life in the contest. Harris then found herself 5-2 in the fourth game but then rattled off winner after winner to only drop one point as she forced a fifth game, winning 11-6.

Nghiem started well again in the deciding game, leading 4-1. She then moved to 9-6 and despite pressure coming from Harris, Nghiem closed out the game 11-9 to claim her second PSA title.
