Northfield Cup Qualifying Gets Underway

All eight seeded players glided through from the first qualifying round of the BDO Northfield Cup, PSA M5 event as the battle for places in the main draw got off to an intriguing start.

Number one seed David Baillargeon progressed after a confident 3-0 triumph over local player Thomas King in an all-Canadian fixture. World No.185 Baillargeon controlled the opening two games but a resurgent King came charging back in the third as he sought to find a way back into the encounter. Baillargeon responded with some well-crafted cross court efforts into the nick to wrap up the result with an 11-5, 11-4, 11-8 margin of victory.

The 19-year-old will line up against Bryan Cueto in the next round after the Mexican narrowly saw off Cameron Seth in a 3-2 win.

Kale Wilson is also through to the next stage of qualifying after dispatching Joel Seider in straight games. Trinidad-born Wilson dominated the fixture throughout to ensure that he will face Nicholas Sachvie in the next round after the number five seed defeated Hossam El Kady.

Micah Franklin also claimed a 3-0 triumph over Blake Reinson and he will face off with England’s Elliot Selby in the next round thanks to the 27-year-old’s win against Gabe Platt.

The other final qualifying round clash will pit Auguste Dussourd and Francisco Mendez Correa against each other after the pair scored respective victories over Quinton Nurse and Diego Caballero.
