New Zealand sealed their place in the quarter-final stage of the World Junior Team Championships for the first time in six years after upsetting number eight seeds Canada in Bielsko-Biala, Poland.

World No.366 Jamie Oakley, the son of legendary four-time Women’s senior World Champion Susan Devoy, had a starring role in his country’s triumph after he opened proceedings against Michael Sehl, winning 3-0, before teammate Finn Trimble lost out to Matthew Henderson to level the scores.

Next up for the Kiwis was Scott Galloway and an assured display from the 18-year-old saw him dispatch Rahul Sehrawat in straight games to send New Zealand through to the last eight.

Title favourites Egypt will go up against New Zealand for a place in the semi-final after they received a bye in the previous round, while Australia are guaranteed a first quarter-final finish for the first time in 14 years courtesy of a 2-1 win over South Africa.

England and the United States were the other nations to seal quarter-final berths after respective wins against Hong Kong and Jordan.

Meanwhile, Poland managed their first ever World Junior Team Championships victory by downing Zimbabwe 2-1 in the 13th-21st play-offs before losing out to Switzerland to ensure that they will face Argentina in the 17th-20th place play-offs.
