Madeira International Day 2: Herbert and Tovar Take Shock Wins

There were a couple of surprise results on the second day of the Madeira International, with England’s Simon Herbert and Colombian Maria Tovar both making it through to the last eight on the Portuguese island.

England’s Herbert took on Egypt’s Ibrahim Elkabbani, the No.6 seed, in the second round, and won in straight games against the man that won the University of Birmingham Open earlier this year to qualify for the CIB PSA World Championships.

The Egyptian was in contention throughout the first game, but he saw Herbert take it on a tie-break, and from then on, the Englishman had full control of the match. He dropped just ten more points across the next two games to win in three, setting up a clash with the tournament’s top seed and home favourite Rui Soares in the quarters.

There was a single surprise in the women’s Challenger 3 level competition as well, as Colombia’s Maria Tovar defeated Germany’s Aylin Gunsav in straight games to make the last eight. The Colombian took the first game 11-5 of their first round clash, and carried the momentum through the next two games to win in three, and she will now face France’s Lea Barbeau, the No.3 seed, in Friday’s quarter finals.

The quarter finals of the Madeira International will take place on Friday, September 9, with all the action from the Galo Active Health Club being streamed live on the Galomar TV YouTube channel.
