Serme Withdraws from U.S. Open Third Round

10 October 2022

Frenchman Lucas Serme has withdrawn from tonight’s U.S. Open third round fixture with Marwan ElShorbagy following his injury sustained during his second round match with Mostafa Asal yesterday.

Serme was two games down and 6-4 behind in the third game when Asal turned on a loose ball at the back of the court and then hit Serme – who was ducking – in the head with the ball.

The match referee deemed it to be an opponent-inflicted injury which was caused accidentally by Asal. Serme was permitted 15 minutes to recover, but the physio deemed Serme unable to continue, with the World No.43 requiring further medical examination, resulting in the match being awarded to Serme.

Serme received treatment at a hospital last night and has suffered a concussion and a perforated eardrum. Everyone at the PSA wishes Lucas a speedy recovery.

As a result, World No.8 Marwan ElShorbagy receives a bye into the quarter-finals.

The U.S. Open third round begins at 17:00 (GMT-4) today – watch all the action live on SQUASHTV.
