LBSQUASH Summer Pro RD2: Le Coq Causes Upset in Connecticut

15 June 2023

France’s World No.355 Julia Le Coq caused the biggest upset on day two of the J.P. Morgan LBSQUASH Summer Pro, PSA Challenger 5 event as she halted No.4 seed Kincso Szász at the Greenwich Academy.

The 29-year-old from Paris hasn’t competed on the tour since the GWC Squash House Challenger in September of last year, but she played some fine squash to dismantle World No.118 Szász, winning by an 11-4, 11-9, 11-1 margin in just 18 minutes.

Le Coq will now aim to reach her first PSA semi-final since April 2021 and her next opponent will be Japan’s No.8 seed Erisa Sano Herring after she beat Canada’s Amal Izhar 3-1.

Elsewhere, USA’s Madison Ho also scored an upset as the World No.423 took out Egypt’s World No.133 Ingy Hammouda, while No.6 seed Salma El Alfy saw her tournament come to an end at the hands of Ho’s compatriot Emma Trauber.

The rest of the matches went to seeding, with title favourite Malak Khafagy cruising past Malaysia’s Min Jie Teh in straight games to set up a last eight battle with compatriot Jana Swaify.

There were also wins for India’s Akanksha Salunkhe and USA’s Caroline Fouts, who beat Ireland’s Hannah Craig and Brazil’s Bruna Marchesi Petrillo.

The quarter-finals of the J.P. Morgan LBSQUASH Summer Pro will take place on Thursday June 15, with play getting under way at 16:30 (GMT-4). You can keep up to date with daily updates from the tournament on the PSA Challenger Tour’s Twitter and Facebook.
