JSW Willingdon Little Masters & Senior Tournament: Unseeded Gallage sets up RD2 clash with No.1 seed Singh

15 January 2024

Action from the JSW Willingdon Little Masters & Senior Tournament continued on Sunday, with women’s round one matches and the second-round of the men’s draw taking place at The Willingdon Sports Club in Mumbai.

In the women’s draw, all but one of the top eight seeds progressed without fail. Dewmini Gallage was the player to provide the upset, fighting her way to an impressive 6-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-4 victory over No.6 seed Janet Vidhi. The 20-year-old set up a second-round tie against No.1 seed and Indian National Champion Anahat Singh, who was awarded a first-round bye.

Elsewhere, there were straight game wins for No.2 seed Erisa Sano Herring and Indian duo Nirupama Dubey and Yeheni Kuruppu, while three seeded players were also awarded walkover victories.

Meanwhile, in the men’s draw, No.1 seed Abhay Singh successfully booked his spot in the quarter-finals after a comfortable straight games victory over Guhan Senthilkumar. Singh, who claimed an Asian Games bronze medal last year in the mixed doubles event, was in top form to overcome his compatriot 11-2, 11-4, 11-5 in just 25 minutes of action.

No.2 seed Suraj Kumar Chand and No.6 seed Om Semwal spent exactly the same amount of time on court as Singh during their respective matches against Shaan Dalal and Jaiedeep Singh Sethi, both progressing in three games.

However, there were three shocks to be had in the men’s draw, with No.3 seed Rahul Baitha, No.7 seed Tuwin Nilakshana Herath and No.8 seed Adarsh Banodha all falling to defeat. Baitha, the World No.200, was defeated by fellow Indian player Arihant K S in a thrilling match which the latter edged 14-12 in a fifth-game tie-break, while Vedant Patel and Ranvijay Sidhu were the other two players to score seeding upsets.
