Hamilton Open: Walid & Bushma score quarter-final upsets

19 October 2023

There were two shock results on day three of the Hamilton Open in Lancaster as Alina Bushma and the unseeded Menna Walid scored upsets to progress through to the semi-finals.

Bushma, who had already defeated No.8 seed Rana Ismael to reach the quarter-finals, continued her fine form to take out No.1 seed for the event Jana Shiha.

Although the 3-0 scoreline suggests a routine victory for the Ukrainian, the match was anything but, with a nip-and-tuck second game eventually taken 17-15 by Bushma and the final game nicked by an 11-9 scoreline.

Bushma will now face No.3 seed Malak Khafagy for a spot in the title decider after the Egyptian saw off the threat of No.6 seed Alicia Mead in four games. Khafagy was slow out of the starting blocks, losing the opener 11-3, but stormed back into the encounter to take the match in just 29 minutes.

In the bottom half of the draw, Menna Walid continued her impressive tournament by upsetting No.4 seed Saskia Beinhard in straight games. The Egyptian, who had knocked out Swiss No.5 seed Nadia Pfister in the second round, needed 32 minutes to progress to the last four, taking the match 11-6, 11-9, 11-7.

There was no upset in the last quarter-final of the day as Egyptian No.7 seed Haya Ali defeated Ingy Hammouda in straight games. Ali needed just 20 minutes to race to victory and set up a semi-final bout against Walid.
