Grasshopper Cup 2023 Finals: Preview, Stats & How To Watch Live

22 October 2023

We’re down to the finals of the Grasshopper Cup, with two intriguing match ups to come in Zurich this afternoon.

Play at Halle 622 in Zurich gets underway from 14:00 (GMT+2) and you can watch both finals live on SQUASHTV or via the channels of the PSA’s broadcast partners.

Nour El Sherbini and Hania El Hammamy face off in a final for the third time already this season, with Joel Makin and Karim Abdel Gawad meeting in the men’s decider.

Order of Play

Nour El Sherbini v Hania El Hammamy

The women’s final sees Egyptian pair Nour El Sherbini and Hania El Hammamy face off once again, with today’s clash their third meeting for a title this season.

El Hammamy was victorious at the QTerminals Qatar Classic in September, but El Sherbini gained revenge when she claimed her maiden U.S. Open crown last weekend over the World No.3.

Reigning champion El Sherbini – who defeated El Hammamy in last year’s final – overcame a trio of Englishwomen on the way to final, beating Lucy Turmel, Sarah-Jane Perry and Georgina Kennedy along the way.

After defeating two of her Egyptian compatriots in Fayrouz Aboelkheir and Rowan Elaraby, El Hammamy got the better of Nele Gilis in the semi-finals yesterday to set up another title showdown with World No.1 El Sherbini.

Joel Makin v Karim Abdel Gawad

There will be a new name on the Grasshopper Cup in the men’s draw, with Joel Makin and Karim Abdel Gawad featuring in the final of this tournament for the first time.

Today’s encounter will be their seventh on the PSA World Tour, with their previous meeting coming at the Windy City Open in 2022 where Makin won 3-1 against Gawad.

Makin has been in excellent form on his way to the final having not dropped a single game, beating tricky opponents in Mohamed Abouelghar, Youssef Ibrahim and Baptiste Masotti.

Former World No.1 Gawad has come through a tough route to earn his place in the final, seeing off Raphael Kandra in round two before taking out top seed Mohamed ElShorbagy in the quarter-finals and his brother Marwan in the last four yesterday.
