Elnawasany & Whitlock Named Top Seeds For NASH Cup 2024

14 August 2024

Egypt’s Yahya Elnawasany and Wales’ Emily Whitlock have been named the top seeds for the NASH Cup 2024 – NASH Family Wealth Management, which will take place between September 17-21 in London, Canada.

The NASH Cup 2024 will become the first Copper-tier event on the PSA Squash Tour and will staged at the London Squash and Fitness Club. The event will see a prize pool of over $50,000 across the two draws.

The men’s field will be headed by World No.39 Elnawasany, a five-time winner on the PSA Tour, with England’s Curtis Malik named as the No.2 seed. After receiving an opening round bye, Elnawasany will open up his campaign against one of England’s Tom Walsh or home wildcard Brett Schille. Meanwhile Malik, who finished runner-up at the event in 2022, will face either Egypt’s Moustafa Elsirty or New Zealand’s Lwamba Chileshe.

Schille will be one of three Canadian’s in the men’s draw, with Salah ElTorgaman and defending champion David Baillargeon the other two players who will be looking to put on a show for the home fans. Baillargeon, the Canadian men’s No.1, defeated Faraz Khan to lift the title last year and will begin his title defence against one of England’s Ben Smith or ElTorgman.

David Baillargeon will return to the NASH Cup in an attempt to defend his title.

Further back in the seedings, World Junior Champion Mohamad Zakaria will certainly pose a danger if his breakthrough 23/24 season is anything to go by. The 17-year-old Egyptian, who stormed to six titles in his debut season on the PSA Tour, is the No.8 seed and could be a potential quarter-final opponent for Elnawasany if both progress through their opening matches.

Elsewhere, Hong Kong’s Leung Chi Hin Henry, the No.4 seed, and USA’s Shahjahan Khan, the No.5 seed, have been named in the same quarter of the draw, while Mexico’s Cesar Salazar and Japan’s Ryunosuke Tsukue are the No.6 and No.7 seeds, respectively.

In the women’s event, Welsh No.2 Whitlock will be on the hunt for her first PSA title since January 2023 and the 20th of her career to date. The 30-year-old top seed will open her account against either Egypt’s Rana Ismail or Australia’s Alex Haydon, whilst also sitting in the same quarter of the draw as England’s Grace Gear.

2022 runner-up and Scotland No.1 Georgia Adderley will arrive in Canada as the No.2 seed, while England’s Katie Malliff is the No.3 seed. If Adderley is to go one further than her 2022 effort, she is seeded to have come through a draw that includes Egypt’s Nour Heikal and Canada’s Nicole Bunyan.

World No.49 Bunyan will be one of three Canadian players featuring in the women’s draw, with Iman Shaheen and Amal Izhar both receiving Wildcard entries. Named as the No.6 seed, Bunyan will open up her tournament against one of Scotland’s Alison Thomson or England’s Saran Nghiem.

After losing out in the 2023 final in five games, Egypt’s Salma Eltayeb will return to the NASH Cup as No.4 seed once again, and could face a pair of fellow up-and-coming players if the event were to go to seeding. After receiving a first-round bye, the 20-year-old could play USA’s Caroline Fouts, before a potential quarter-final clash against England’s No.8 seed Torrie Malik.
