Eastside Open Day 1: Busy Opening Day In Men’s Event

16 matches took place on the opening day of the Eastside Open in Australia, as the 32-strong men’s draw took to the court in the hope of reaching the second round of the Challenger 5 level tournament.

There was just the single surprise in the first round of the men’s event, as Australian James Lloyd took down No.6 seed Harley Lam of Hong Kong. The Aussie took the first two games rather comfortably, before seeing the No.6 seed fight back to send the match into a deciding game, including winning the fourth on a tie-break. The fifth was very tight, but it was Lloyd that came through it, winning it 11-9 after 80 minutes to advance to the second round.

That was the only match of the day to go to five, while top seed, New Zealand’s Lwamba Chileshe, fought past Pakistan’s Muhammad Abdul Qadir in four. Elsewhere, the leading Australian in the draw, Rhsy Dowling, also went to four games against compatriot Cameron Darton.

The second day of the Eastside Open will see the women’s event get underway, alongside the men’s second round action, with eight matches taking place in each draw at the Eastside Squash Centre in Hobart, Australia.
