Canadian outsider Shawn Delierre became the first local winner of the Edmonton Open when he beat England’s Laurence Delasaux in the final of the $10,000 PSA World Tour event in its third year at the Royal Glenora Club in Edmonton in the Canadian province of Alberta.
While Delasaux, the second seed, was expected to make the final, Delierre was seeded only to make the quarter-finals – but the 28-year-old from Montreal made his breakthrough by beating third-seeded Mexican Eric Galvez to reach the semi-finals.
There the seventh seed took out another Mexican Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira to earn his surprise place in the final, the 11th of his career.
Delasaux, the 25-year-old world No71 from Yorkshire was celebrating his second successive Tour final in Canada after winning the Saskatoon Boast Open the previous week. But Delierre used his amazing shot selection and incredible retrieval ability to bring an end the Englishman’s run.
The first game was extremely close with neither player able to lengthen the lead by more than two points until the end. Delierre was able to find a way to win it and came out shooting in the second game. He had a commanding 5-0 lead in the second before Delasaux was able to score his first point.
But again Delierre prevailed and took a commanding two-game lead in the match. The Englishman was able to mount a comeback in the third but again Delierre came out shooting in the fourth soon closed out the match 11-9, 11-6, 6-11, 11-6 in 70 minutes.
The title triumph marked Delierre’s second PSA tournament win this year – and the eighth of his career.
