Corren Retains Perth Prize

18 December 2014

Australian Mike Corren successfully defended his title in the City of Perth International, the PSA World Tour Challenger 5 event in Perth in Australia.

In his third successive appearance in the final, second seed Corren (pictured) upset top-seeded compatriot Matthew Karwalski in four games 12-10, 3-11, 13-11, 11-7 to take out the title.

But the South Australian was made to work hard during the tournament and was pushed to the brink by 17-year-old Indian qualifier Mahesh Mangaonkar in the semi-finals, eventually winning 7-11, 4-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-9 to take his place in the decider.

“The semi-final was really, really hard,” conceded Corren later. “He (Mangaonkar) is going to be an extremely good player – I just managed to fall over the line.”

Corren, who has been training in Adelaide with Mike Nash, said the semi-final had left him drained for the decider.

“Halfway through the first game I knew I was in a bit of trouble. But Mike’s been helping me technically and tactically, and without that help I don’t think I would have got through.”

Mike Corren is celebrating his 34th PSA Tour title – and is now just one final away from making his 50th Tour climax.

Corren now heads to Kalgoorlie for the Golden Open, where he is again seeded to meet Karwalski in the final.
