Chan Sin Yuk: 2022 Year In Review

27 December 2022

As we come to the end of 2022, we have taken the time to speak to some of the Tour’s stars of the year. Our focus in today’s piece is Hong Kong’s Chan Sin Yuk.

Hong Kong’s Yuk is one of the Tour’s rising stars, and has also had some seriously good results on the PSA World Tour over the course of the last twelve months.

The 20-year-old won three times this year, including a victory at the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions Challenger. That then gave her the wildcard for the main draw at the PSA World Tour Gold level J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions, where she made the second round.

She also won two Challenger 10 level tournaments in Australia in 2022, and has moved from outside the world’s top 70, to now being consistently a feature at the Platinum events, as part of the world’s top 40.

Chan Sin Yuk

World Ranking – January: World No.72
World Ranking – December: World No.36 (career-best of World No.33 in November)
Titles Won: 3
– J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions Challenger (Challenger 10 level)
– North Coast Open (10)
– Volkswagen Bega Open (10)

See what she had to say about her breakout year here…

“I think it has been a good year for me. I think I’ve been progressing, improving a lot from the beginning of the year to now.

“Yeah, I think in the first tournament of the year, it was the E.M. Noll in Philadelphia. I didn’t really do well, I lost in the second round to Jasmine Hutton. I was rushing a lot in that match and I tried to do better than that in the, in the other matches. I think I did improve and I played better against Tinne [Gilis] in the Squash on Fire Open.

“Then I also won the TOC [Tournament of Champions] Challenger and got into the TOC main draw. I was, I was very happy about that and yeah. And I also did well that TOC and I think it was a good experience playing against Salma [Hany] and

“I also worked with my coaches during the summer and yeah, they also reflect on my performances during the, during different tournaments in the previous season.

On making the Hong Kong national team…

“Then I also got into the Hong Kong national team to play in the Asian Games and Women’s World Team Championships, and I was really happy about that. And yeah, it was good to win for Hong Kong [at the Asian Games].

“So I’m happy with how I did, yeah and I’m looking forward to play for Hong Kong at the Women’s World Team Championships this week.
(We spoke to Simmi prior to the event in Cairo)

“Yeah one year ago, I didn’t really expect myself to be on the team because yeah, a year ago I was starting out, but I also really wanted to get into the team. So I was playing a lot of events and trying to play as good as I possibly could in each of them. I’m just pretty happy I can be playing with the team.

On her performances in New York, and on playing top players…

“That was, that was my first time playing on a glass court in a public area [Grand Central Terminal]. So it was pretty special.

“And then it was also in New York and because I’m studying in New York, so there was a lot of Columbia [University] volunteers and also some Columbia graduates and they were all cheering for me. So it was a great experience.

“I think it’s about mainly about consistency on the hitting. She [Salma Hany] was giving good shots to me, and like, I can hit good shots for one or two rallies maybe. And I was focused about the overall pace and, yeah, I think that’s the main difference.

“Yeah, I think they improve on that. But, but there’s still room to improve there. But I think those three events are a good part of the season. I also did well in the Oracle NetSuite Open and the U.S. Open.

“I felt really good in the match against Amanda, she’s one of the top five players in the world and the intensity was much higher than any other matches I have had. I really enjoyed playing against these top players.

“And yeah, I think we can, we can learn a lot from them. It’s also about, because it’s the consistency and I just really want to play against those top players and I’m looking forward to playing more in more Platinum events.

“This is my goal but I am also a student right now. I may not be able to play in every Platinum event but I’m also playing some maybe Challenger 10s and 20s if the time is good. I think the target is just to win every match that I play, no matter who I play against.”
