Challenger Tour Round-Up: Bernet & Meredith Wins Headline Day One in Madeira

23 November 2023

International Tournament Madeira Island

A 71-minute battle between David Bernet and Pablo Quintana highlighted day one of the International Tournament Madeira Island, as six of the eight [9/16] seeds progressed.

Game one alone lasted 26 minutes, with Quintana eventually taking it 12-10, but the physical toll taken on the Spaniard would prove to be decisive.

Bernet took the next two games to move in front, and everything Quintana threw at him in the courth came back, with the Swiss player running out a 3-1 winner to book his spot in round two.

Noah Meredith and Omar ElKattan were the two players to knock out the seeds, both coming through in five games, beating Miguel Mathis and Nilo Vidal respectively.

In the women’s draw, World No.367 Hebaallah Nossier caused the biggest shock of round one, beating Sweden’s Lovisa Ronge 3-0.

Nossier is playing just her second ever PSA Tour event, but needed just 24 minutes to beat a player ranked almost 100 spots higher than her in the rankings.

BKY Technologies Open

All eight [9/16] seeds made it through to round two of the BKY Technologies Open, with all but one match ending in straight games.

Hong Kong’s Andes Ling was the only player who needed four to record his win, coming from a game down to knock out Canada’s Blake Reinson.

Reinson was one of four Canadians to go out on day one, meaning the only home hopes are with the three seeded players – Salah Eltorgman, Liam Marrison and Connor Turk – who enter in round two.

Les Elles de l’Est

16-year-old Egyptian Nadien Elhammamy showcased her talent on day one of the Les Elles de l’Est, taking just 19 minutes to beat Aylin Günsav.

Elhammamy dropped only 10 points in the match, and will now play No.6 seed Ana Munos in round two.

Munos is one of six French players in the hat for round two, alongside Rose Lucas Marcuzzo, who caused a round-one upset to set up an all-French clash with 16-year-old rising star and No.1 seed Lauren Baltayan.
