Calgary Women’s Week RD2: Turnbull, Hamed and Tyma Cause Upsets

10 March 2023

The second day of the Calgary CFO Consulting Services Women’s Squash Week saw a trio of upsets as the seeds came into the draw.

The top eight seeds entered the draw at the second round stage in Calgary, but three of those were dumped out of the Challenger 20 level competition after just a single match.

Egypt’s Menna Hamed got the better of Hong Kong’s Tsz-Wing Tong, the No.4 seed, in a five-game battle. The Egyptian, ranked 36 places below Tong, found herself 2-1 down after three games. She fought back though, winning the fourth 11-6 before clinching victory in a tight fifth game. Hamed won it 11-9 after a massive 75 minutes of action, to advance to the quarter finals.

She is joined by Australia’s Jessica Turnbull and Polish No.1 Karina Tyma, who also caused upsets. Turnbull defeated former World No.20 Millie Tomlinson in four games, while Tyma was a victor in straight games over Australian Sarah Cardwell, the No.8 seed.

Elsewhere on day two, home favourite Danielle Letourneau came from behind to defeated another Australian, in Alex Haydon. The Canadian lost the opener 11-9, but was able to regroup to win in four games. The English trio of Lucy Beecroft, Katie Malliff and top seed Lucy Turmel, along with Hong Kong’s Tomato Ho, will also feature in the last eight.

The action continues at the Calgary CFO Consulting Services Women’s Squash Week, with the quarter finals taking place on Friday, March 10. You can keep up to date with daily updates from the tournament on the PSA Challenger Tour’s Twitter and Facebook
