Asal & El Tayeb headline Ace Malaysia Squash Cup 2023 Bronze Event

4 October 2023

Egyptian duo Mostafa Asal and Nour El Tayeb will be the headline acts at November’s Ace Malaysia Squash Cup in Seremban.

The PSA World Tour Bronze event, which will take place between 6-10 November, will see 24 men’s and women’s players battle it out at the S2 Sports Complex.

After being awarded a bye in round one, Asal is set to face one of World No.80 Christopher Gordon or Japan’s Ryunosuke Tsukue in his opening match of the tournament. The Egyptian, who rose to the summit of the men’s game and became World No.1 in January 2023, could face Indian No.5 seed Saurav Ghosal in the quarter-finals if the event were to go to seedings.

Elsewhere in the top half of the draw, French No.1 Victor Crouin will play one of Henry Leung or Wildcard Mohammad Syafiq Kamal in the second round before a potential bout against No.8 seed Ramit Tandon in the last eight.

Former World No.1 Gawad leads the bottom half of the draw and is set to face either 9/16 seeded Tsz Kwan Lau or Egypt’s Yassin Elshafei in round two. The No.2 seed is then predicted to face Swiss No.2 Dimitri Steinmann in the quarter-finals.

Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng, who has been seeded No.4 for his home event, will hope to give his supporters plenty to cheer about when he takes on one of Ibrahim Elkabbani or Malaysian compatriot Ameeshenraj Chandaran in round two.

No.6 seed Sebastien Bonmalais could await in the quarter-finals if the Frenchman were to progress past England’s Ben Smith or Muhammad Asim Khan in round two.

In the women’s draw, World No.6 Nour El Tayeb and Egyptian compatriot Farida Mohamed have been drawn as the top two seeds.

El Tayeb, who recently won her first event of the season at the South Western Open, will play the winner of Saskia Beinhard or Hong Kong’s Tsz-Wing Tong in the second round of the event. If the former World No.3 were to progress past that stage, a blockbuster quarter-final against Egyptian prodigy and No.6 seed Amina Orfi could await if the event were to go according to seedings.

Elsewhere in the top half of the draw, Malaysia’s No.3 seed Aifa Azman will look to make good use of the home crowd to progress through her opening match against Switzerland’s Nadia Pfister or Ka Yi Lee.

In the bottom half of the draw, Mohamed is scheduled to play either Menna Hamed or 9/16 seed Low Wee Wern in the second round before a potential quarter-final bout against Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold.

Either one of Egypt’s Nadine Shahin or Sana Ibrahim, who have been seeded at No.4 and No.8, respectively, could await Mohamed if the World No.17 were to progress through to the semi-finals.
