Walsh and Poleshchuk Reach Maiden Silver Second Rounds as Canadian Open Begins
England’s Tom Walsh and Israel’s Daniel Poleshchuk reached the second round of a Silver-level PSA World Tour event for the first time in their careers after wins on day one of the Canadian Men’s Open 2024 Presented by AirSprint Private Aviation.
World No.67 Walsh recovered from an edgy start at Calgary’s Bow Valley Athletic Club to dispatch Colombian World No.130 Edgar Ramirez 11-8, 11-9, 11-8 to set up a second round clash with Egyptian No.2 seed and World No.7 Mazen Hesham.
“I guess I’m considered a ‘good draw’ in these kind of events at the moment, which is a bit tough mentally so I knew I had an opportunity to get the win,” Walsh said afterwards.
World No.69 Poleshchuk, meanwhile, cruised past Tayyab Aslam, with the Pakistani World No.258 – who was playing just his second PSA World Tour match since 2022 after a lengthy spell injured – unable to deal with the pace of the Israeli, with Poleshchuk claiming a 11-7, 11-3, 11-5 win in just 24 minutes.
Poleshchuk will take on No.3 seed Youssef Soliman of Egypt in round two.
Tomorrow will see the seeded players, including top seed and former World No.1 Diego Elias of Peru, enter the draw.
