TTI Milwaukke Hong Kong Squash Open 2023: Sobhy Stuns World No.1 El Sherbini

2 December 2023

U.S. No.1 Amanda Sobhy produced an excellent performance to oust World No.1 Nour El Sherbini and progress to the final of the Hong Kong Open.

Sobhy was immaculate with her tactics against the reigning World Champion, as El Sherbini struggled to handle the American’s accuracy throughout all three games.

Tonight’s semi final meeting was the 18th time they had met on the PSA World Tour, and Sobhy last defeated El Sherbini at the Black Ball Squash Open in March this year.

Too many unforced errors came from El Sherbini’s racket in the opening game as Sobhy capitalised to take the first 11-8.

A 6-2 lead from Sobhy in the second was enough to keep El Sherbini at arm’s length, with the American dominating the middle of the court.

Sobhy converted game ball at the first attempt, and she went on to have seven match balls in the third. The American sealed the match to reach her first Hong Kong Open final since 2016.

I feel great!” Sobhy said post-match.

“That was really enjoyable squash for me to play. I think that’s some of the best squash I’ve played, especially movement-wise.

“I felt so free out there which was such a nice feeling and you don’t get many opportunities like this to go and play and compete for a final.

“I want to make the most of it and really challenge the big three – I want to put myself in that category! She [Nour El Sherbini] made some errors and that probably wasn’t her best squash, but I’m happy with how I played.”

Result
[3] Amanda Sobhy (USA) bt [1] Nour ElSherbini (EGY) 3-0: 11-8, 11-4, 11-3 (30m)
