Subramaniam Secures Semi-final Spot with Win over Alicia Mead

8 March 2024

Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam claimed a resounding victory over England’s Alicia Mead to progress to her third World Tour semi-final of the season.

Subramaniam looked a cut above her opponent from the outset with Mead, who scored an upset win over No.7 seed Hana Ramadan the day before, failing to keep up with the Malaysian’s aggressive pace of play.

There were good early signs from Mead as she kept pace with the World No.16 to 5-6, but Subramaniam showed her quality as she pulled away to a comfortable 11-6 win.

The No.3 seed went from 3-3 to 10-3 in the second game through a combination of accurate winning shots and mistakes from the Englishwoman, and despite some better signs from Mead in her fight back, Subramaniam earned a 2-0 lead at 11-8 with an awkward front-court boast.

Mead showed her mettle as she pushed to a 6-3 lead in the third game, but Subramaniam continued her dominant performance as she overcame the deficit to win the third game 11-8 and claim the match.

“It’s all about hard work,” said Subramaniam when asked about her recent success.

“I think with this match we both warmed up 5-6 times because the match before took forever, but I came in wanting to get a positive start and I’m glad I did well and I’m happy to have won the third and I’m just happy to be progressing to the next round.”
