Sabrina Sobhy Digs in v Beecroft for All-Sobhy Semi Final in Canada

29 March 2023

In the second match of the day, Sabrina Sobhy came through a tense encounter with England’s Lucy Beecroft.

Both players had looked in strong form in their opening matches of the tournament yesterday – with No.8 seed Beecroft cruising past Saskia Beinhard in 21 minutes and Sobhy recording a straight-games victory over Zeina Zein – but it was Sobhy who struck first, with the No.3 seed taking a 1-0 lead after an 11-6 win.

World No.43 Beecroft responded brilliantly in the second game, with her strong forehand able to beat Sobhy’s defences and she found parity with an 11-9 victory.

The Englishwoman continued to step up the court in the third game and had the opportunity to go 2-1 up with a game ball at 10-9, only for Sobhy to dig in and eventually claim the lead with a 13-11 win.

Sobhy appeared buoyed by this and the American pushed on to take the fourth game 11-7 and set up a semi-final showdown with her sister Amanda.

Afterwards, Sobhy said: “[Being the favourite] really adds tension and stress tremendously. I got little frustrated and angry with myself when I couldn’t calm my thoughts and place the ball where I wanted to place it and she’s incredibly skilful.”

On sharing a coaching team with sister Amanda, she added: “She knows her stuff and I’m glad we’ve got the same three guys in our corner because they’re incredible!”

Result
[3] Sabrina Sobhy (USA) bt [8] Lucy Beecroft (ENG) 3-1: 11-6, 9-11, 13-11, 11-7 (48m)
