New World Champion Elias Moves Back To World No.3 Whilst Mazen Hesham Breaks Top 5 For The First Time

20 May 2024

The new PSA Men’s World Champion Diego Elias has moved back inside the world’s top three this week after his momentous victory in Cairo. The Peruvian has moved back ahead of the player he beat in Saturday’s final Mostafa Asal to occupy the No.3 spot and sits less than 50 points away from World No.2 Paul Coll.

Elias only surrendered one game during the entire World Championships as he battled past previous champions Karim Abdel Gawad and World No.1 Ali Farag to set up a final meeting with Asal. After the opening two games were controlled by Elias, Asal started to find his way into the third game but Elias hung tough to force a tiebreak, which he won 12-10 to secure the biggest title in squash.

Egypt’s Mazen Hesham has been in terrific form all season and looks to have put his injury woes behind him to produce constant, quality performances. He’s been rewarded with a spot in the top five in the world for the first time in his career as he overtakes compatriot Karim Abdel Gawad in this weeks rankings. Hesham has reached the quarter finals or better in 26 of his last 28 events. Superb consistency from the talented Egyptian and something that many said has been the main thing holding him back.

Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng has also achieved his highest world ranking this week as he moves to World No.15. Yow Ng claimed his first World Tour title in Germany last month and backed that up with his highest finish at a World championships last week as he made it through to round three.
