Low Wee Wern Announces Retirement From Professional Squash

21 February 2024

Malaysia’s former World No.5 Low Wee Wern announced her retirement from professional squash yesterday, calling time on a 18 year career.

Low made her first PSA appearance in the Penang Open in 2006, where she lost out in the qualifying draw. From there, the Malaysian went on to achieve a highest World Ranking of World No.5, claimed 12 PSA titles and secured four Malaysian National titles.

The biggest titles that Low won both came in China as she captured the China Open in 2012 and 2014, a 50k World Tour event. Low defeated New Zealand’s Joelle King in 2012 and France’s Camille Serme in 2014.

Unfortunately, Low’s career was plagued by injuries, resulting in lengthy spells away from squash as she recovered. The 33-year-old continued to come back and showcase her quality on the PSA tour including recording a 16 match winning streak as she claimed four titles in a row after a spell of nearly 2 years away from the sport.

Low played in seven events in 2023, last featuring in the Barfoot & Thompson New Zealand Open, where she lost out to eventual champion Nele Gilis.

Taking to her personal Instagram account on Wednesday, Low wrote: “It is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement from professional squash.

“This day is inevitable but what a journey it has been! I am grateful to my team who stood by me, my sponsors and everyone along the way. The unwavering support I’ve received has been the driving force behind this memorable journey.

“Though this chapter concludes, my passion for the sport and inspiring others remains. Here’s to new beginnings, a new journey of encouragement, determination and motivation. I am excited for the opportunities ahead.

“Thank you all for being a part of this incredible ride! I am blessed beyond words.”
