J.P. Morgan Tournament Of Champions: El Hammamy Dispatches Aboelkheir In Straight Games

23 January 2024

World No.2 Hania El Hammamy comprehensively booked her place in the last four after defeating fellow Egyptian Fayrouz Aboelkheir in straight games in a fiery affair.

It was only the second time the Egyptian duo were going head-to-head on the PSA World Tour, with their recent clash being at the Grasshopper Cup in the first half of the season.

It was a straight sets win for El Hammamy in Switzerland and it was the same on this occasion, with the World No.2 looking sharp and upping the pace to make life difficult for her opponent in a match where the flow was disrupted.

After taking the first 11-9, El Hammamy forced some key errors from Aboelkheir’s racket in the second as she doubled her advantage over the 17-year-old, who was appearing in a Platinum quarter final for the first time.

El Hammamy’s movement and sharpness didn’t let up in the third, as she pressed on to secure a semi final showdown with Nour El Sherbini.

“Fayrouz [Aboelkheir] is a gifted player for sure,” she said afterwards.

“She had a good win in the previous round against Salma Hany, but I think I’ve reached where I am and I’ve earned this position for a reason.

“I’ve gained a lot of experience and I’ve had a lot of battles to be in this position. I needed to bring that on today.”

Result:
[3] Hania El Hammamy (EGY) bt Fayrouz Aboelkheir (EGY) 3-0: 11-9, 11-6, 11-7 (35m)
