El Hammamy Returns to No.2 in PSA Women’s World Rankings

15 January 2024

Egypt’s Hania El Hammamy has risen to a joint career-high ranking of World No.2 following her runner-up finish at last week’s SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open.

Here’s our look at the most notable movers of the week, as of Monday January 15.

New Ranking: No.2

Previous Ranking: No.3

El Hammamy has overtaken arch-rival Nouran Gohar to return to No.2 for the first time since April, 2023.

The 23-year-old overcame Gohar in an epic 99-minute battle in the semi-finals, earning her a place in her 26th PSA final, where the heavy legs looked to play a toll as she went down in straight games to World No.1 Nour El Sherbini.

Farida Mohamed

New Ranking: No.17

Previous Ranking: No.18

Seeded eighth, Egypt’s Farida Mohamed reached the quarter-finals in Florida before falling to Gohar in a 3-0 defeat.

That was enough to see her leapfrog Abbas to return to No.17 in the world, with Abbas going down to Hong Kong’s Chan Sin Yuk in the second round.

Hollie Naughton

New Ranking: No.19

Previous Ranking: No.20

Canada’s Hollie Naughton has risen a spot to No.19 in the world, with previous incumbent Satomi Watanabe falling outside of the top 20 as a result of her semi-final points at last year’s Carol Weymuller Open expiring.

Melissa Alves

New Ranking: No.20

Previous Ranking: No.21

France’s Melissa Alves is also a beneficiary of Watanabe’s points expiring, moving up a spot to return to the top 20 for the first time since November, 2023.
