21 October 2023

It’s semi finals day in the Grasshopper Cup as the last eight men and women standing compete for a spot in the final in Zurich.

Play begins at 16:45 (GMT+2) on the all-glass court in Halle 622, with today’s matches being played best of five.

Nour El Sherbini v Georgina Kennedy

Play begins at 16:45 (GMT+2) with top seed and women’s World No.1 Nour El Sherbini of Egypt taking on English No.4 seed Georgina Kennedy.

Both players have cruised through to the semi final. Kennedy is yet to drop a game after 2-0 wins over Grace Gear and Satomi Watanabe, while El Sherbini is playing her third English opponent in succession after overcoming Lucy Turmel 2-1 in round two and Sarah-Jane Perry 2-0 in the quarter final.

Today’s match will be the sixth the pair have contested in the past six months. With El Sherbini enjoying a perfect record against the Englishwoman, expect the lightning fast World No.8 to throw everything at ‘the Warrior Princess.’

Baptiste Masotti v Joel Makin

In an intriguing contest, French No.7 seed Baptiste Masotti goes up against Welsh No.5 seed Joel Makin.

Both recorded impressive wins yesterday to reach this stage, with Masotti coming from behind to beat former World No.1 Mostafa Asal in a controversial clash, while Makin impressed as he saw off the dangerous Youssef Ibrahim in two games.

The two last met in March, when Masotti overcame Makin in straight games in the quarter final of the Optasia Championships, though Makin has a 2-1 head-to-head record overall.

Will Masotti continue his run? Or will Makin’s supreme fitness prove the difference with semi final matches being played best of five?

Nele Gilis v Hania El Hammamy

This one could be a classic.

In a repeat of the U.S. Open quarter final just 10 days ago, Belgian No.3 seed Nele Gilis faces Egyptian No.2 seed Hania El Hammamy.

El Hammamy got the better of the Belgian in Philadelphia to extend her head-to-head record to 7-1, with Gilis’ sole victory over the Egyptian a 3-2 win in the second round of the 2019 British Open.

When playing best of five, the pair’s average match time has been 63 minutes, so strap in for what is sure to be an entertaining contest.

Marwan ElShorbagy v Karim Abdel Gawad

In the last match of the day, it’s No.3 seed Marwan ElShorbagy of England against No.6 seed Karim Abdel Gawad of Egypt.

Gawad, a former World No.1 and the 2016 World Champion, blew the competition wide open in the quarter-finals yesterday win a tight 12-10, 9-11, 11-9 win over top seed Mohamed ElShorbagy.

Today, Marwan will be looking to avenge his brother’s defeat as well as move the head-to-head dial, with Gawad enjoying a healthy 10-5 record against the England No.2.

Expect no quarter to be given in what will surely be a gripping contest between ElShorbagy’s tactical acumen and Gawad’s flair.
