Gohar Returns to World No.2 in PSA Women’s World Rankings
Egypt’s Nouran Gohar has overtaken arch-rival Hania El Hammamy to return to World No.2 following her triumph at the Black Ball Squash Open in Cairo last week.
Here’s our look at the most notable movers of the week, as of Monday April 22.
Nouran Gohar
Previous Ranking: No.3
New Ranking: No.2
Gohar captured the 24th PSA title of her career last week, beating USA’s Olivia Weaver in straight games to move level with the legendary Raneem El Welily as the second most successful Egyptian woman in the sport.
When it comes to Egyptian women, only Nour El Sherbini has more titles than Gohar does, and El Sherbini is now also the only woman above Gohar in the PSA Women’s World Rankings.
Olivia Weaver
Previous Ranking: No.9
New Ranking: No.7
Olivia Weaver celebrated her first PSA World Tour Gold final at the Black Ball Open and has been rewarded with a two-place rise to No.7.
The American beat France’s Melissa Alves, Egypt’s Hana Moataz and Belgium’s Tinne Gilis en route to the final, where she eventually came undone against a relentless Gohar.
Sivasangari Subramaniam
Previous Ranking: No.13
New Ranking: No.11
Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam is on the cusp of a top 10 place after moving up two spots to a career-high ranking of No.11.
Sivasangari’s points for the Women’s Kinetic Orange Ball 30K Challenger expired last week, meaning the amount of tournaments she has played over the past 12 months has dropped to 17. That has actually helped the 25-year-old’s ranking, as her divisor has dropped to 13, meaning her points average has increased despite not appearing at the Black Ball Open.
Sabrina Sobhy
Previous Ranking: No.15
New Ranking: No.14
Japan’s Satomi Watanabe also saw her points for the Kinetic Orange Ball event expire, meaning she has dropped five places back in the ranking – resulting in a number of players moving the other way.
USA’s Sabrina Sobhy is one of the beneficiaries and now sits just a spot behind her career-high ranking of No.13.
