Gilis sisters are on the move in latest World Tour Finals Leaderboard

11 December 2023

The New Zealand Open concluded over the weekend, drawing the PSA World Tour events to a close for 2023. Nele Gilis and Paul Coll claimed the Silver event finals, much to the adoring crowd’s delight.

Coll was beaten in last year’s final by Mohamed ElShorbagy but was up against Mohamed’s younger brother Marwan this time around and made no mistake as he claimed a straight games win to banish last years demons and claim a third title of the season.

It was another all-Gilis final in the women’s event as Nele Gilis took on younger sister Tinne for a second title of the season and first Silver event win. She also needed just three games to overcome her sister and score more valuable World Tour Finals points.

Men’s winner Coll has already qualified for the PSA World Tour Finals having won the US Open followed by the Hong Kong Open but has further cemented himself as the No.2 behind World No.1 Ali Farag with this win on home soil.

The win for Nele Gilis has allowed her to jump above USA’s Hong Kong Open finalist Amanda Sobhy into third place behind Egyptian duo Nour ElSherbini and Hania El Hammamy. She is now more than 3,000 points ahead of 8th place and in a very strong position heading into 2024.

Women’s runner-up Tinne Gilis has never featured in the PSA World Tour Finals but after several strong performances in recent months, culminating in another final last week has moved into sixth place in the women’s standings and is also in a very promising position heading into the new year.

The rest of the standings remained largely unchanged but New Zealand Open men’s runner-up Marwan ElShorbagy has moved ahead of Karim Abdel Gawad whilst Wales’ Joel Makin has moved back inside the top eight, taking the place of Egypt’s Mazen Hesham.
