Gawad climbs up PSA World Tour Finals Leaderboard

23 October 2023

Karim Abdel Gawad has surged up the PSA World Tour Finals leaderboard after claiming victory at the Grasshopper Cup 2023 Gold-level event, while fellow champion Nour El Sherbini remains at the top of the women’s rankings.

Gawad has climbed from 13th position all the way up to fifth following his victorious run, which included impressive wins over Mohamed and Marwan ElShorbagy as well as Joel Makin.

World No.9 Makin has risen one place, now sitting in sixth, while Grasshopper Cup semi-finalist Baptiste Masotti, who conquered the returning Mostafa Asal, enters the top 15 for the first time this campaign.

The top four of Ali Farag, Diego Elias, Paul Coll and Tarek Momen all remain unchanged.

Meanwhile, World No.1 Nour El Sherbini has stretched her lead at the top of the women’s leaderboard after she scooped up her third title of the 2023-24 season, with fellow finalist Hania El Hammamy remaining second.

England No.1 Georgina Kennedy and Nele Gilis have both climbed above Nouran Gohar, while Egypt’s Rowan Elaraby has risen six places in the PSA World Tour Finals Leaderboard after reaching the quarter-finals in Zurich.

The PSA World Tour Finals are set to take place in June 2024, with the event including both a men’s and women’s tournament, featuring eight players in each.

All Platinum title winners from the 2023-24 season – which are currently El Sherbini, El Hammamy, men’s World No.1 Farag and Coll – automatically qualify alongside the reigning PSA World Champions.

Any remaining places are allocated to the highest-ranked players on the PSA World Tour Finals Leaderboard, with points available at all PSA World Tour events throughout the 2023-24 season.

Gawad doesn’t automatically qualify for the PSA World Tour Finals despite victory because the Grasshopper Cup 2023 is a Gold-level event and not a Platinum tournament.
