Nouran Gohar v Nour El Sherbini

For the fourth time this season, World No.1 Nour El Sherbini and World No.2 Nouran Gohar are set to meet in the final of a PSA World Tour Platinum event.

El Sherbini has come out on top in all three of these encounters – the Paris Squash, J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions, and Windy City Open title deciders – and holds a superior head-to-head record over Gohar, winning 22 of their 30 meetings on the PSA Tour.

‘The Warrior Princess’ will be on the hunt for her 7th title of the season in El Gouna, and it will take a special performance from Gohar to stop her from taking home the trophy. On her way to the final, El Sherbini has defeated Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold, Egyptian duo Nada Abbas and Rowan Elaraby, and Belgium’s Tinne Gilis in last night’s semi-final.

However, Gohar is certainly entering this final with her best form of the season to date, arriving in El Gouna on the back of a dominant title victory at her home club, the Black Ball Sporting Club, last week and a string of powerful performances in this event.

‘The Terminator’ has made light work of what looked a tough draw, dropping just one game from her four matches against Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam, Egypt’s Amina Orfi, American Olivia Weaver, and Georgina Kennedy of England.

With both players looking in top form and likely to want to put out a statement ahead of the World Championships, which starts in just under a fortnight’s time, expect this match to have fireworks and potentially go all the way down to the wire.

Ali Farag v Mostafa Asal

For the second time in as many weeks, World No.1 Ali Farag and World No.4 Mostafa Asal will fight for silverware in the final of a PSA World Tour event.

At last week’s Black Ball Open, it was Asal who conquered Farag in four games thanks to an outstanding performance that married together his incredible movement, destructive power, and fresh mindset, which has been instilled by his new coach James Willstrop.

Asal has carried on this rich vein of form into the El Gouna International this week – notably seeing off the threat of Karim Abdel Gawad in three games in the semi-final. The short duration of what could have been a difficult encounter, just 54 minutes in length, will give Asal another great opportunity to take down the top seed, and, in turn capture his first Platinum title of the season.

Farag, though, will be on the hunt for revenge after last week’s defeat and can lean back upon his favourable head-to-head record against Asal to give him some comfort. Of Asal’s five victories over Farag, three have come in the best-of-three format, with the World No.1 notoriously hard to break down over the longer, traditional format.

So far this week, Farag has also looked in imperious form, dropping just a single game from his matches against Curtis Malik, Nicolas Mueller, Mohamed ElShorbagy and Tarek Momen.

Be sure to get the popcorn ready for this one, with this match between the Egyptian duo looking like a fitting way to round off the El Gouna International 2024.
