Eain Yow Reaches Career-High Ranking of No.16 Following German Open Triumph

8 April 2024

Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng has reached a career-high ranking of No.16 following his victory in the final of the German Open – Presented by Sportwerk last night.

Here’s our look at the most notable movers of the week, as of Monday April 8.

Eain Yow Ng

Previous Ranking: No.22

New Ranking: No.16

Eain Yow captured his first title in 12 months when he overcame Switzerland’s Dimitri Steinmann by a 3-1 margin in Hamburg to win his seventh PSA title and first Bronze-level trophy.

The 26-year-old’s points for his last 16 finish at the GillenMarkets London Squash Classic also come onto his ranking this week, contributing to his six-place rise as he returns to the top 20.

Joel Makin

Previous Ranking: No.11

New Ranking: No.10

Welshman Joel Makin returns to the top 10 after back-to-back semi-final finishes in Germany and London.

The 29-year-old went down in a nail-biting five-game battle with World No.2 Paul Coll at the London Classic and suffered a 3-1 defeat to Eain Yow in Germany.

Declan James

Previous Ranking: No.77

New Ranking: No.60

England’s Declan James was one of the stars of the show in London as he battled his way to the semi-finals against all the odds.

The 30-year-old had seen his ranking plummet outside of the top 100 after an 11 month absence between November 2022 – October 2023 due to a ruptured Achilles tendon. But, in the spectacular setting of Alexandra Palace, he put together his most impressive performance since his comeback.

Handed the wildcard spot for the event, James upset Egypt’s Mohamed ElSherbini and Frenchman Baptiste Masotti before a huge upset over No.3 seed and World Championship runner-up Karim Abdel Gawad in the last eight.

A closely fought semi-final encounter with Mostafa Asal eventually saw James bow out, but he proved himself a real crowd favourite during the week in Ally Pally and his reward is a 17-place rise in the rankings.

Dimitri Steinmann

Previous Ranking: No.34

New Ranking: No.28

Switzerland’s Dimitri Steinmann has risen six places to No.28, his highest ranking since October 2023.

Seeded at No.6 for the German Open, Steinmann put together a fine run of form which saw him beat Portugal’s Rui Soares, Spain’s Bernat Jaume and Egypt’s Mohamed ElSherbini to reach the title decider, where he eventually fell to Eain Yow in a tightly contested four-game battle.
