Defending champ El Hammamy dominates Kennedy to reach CIB Egyptian Open semi-final

3 September 2024

Reigning champion Hania El Hammamy booked her spot in the last four of the CIB Egyptian Open with a convincing win over England’s Georgina Kennedy oat Club O West.

The first game between No.3 seed El Hammamy and No.5 seed Kennedy was relatively close, with Kennedy hitting at pace.

El Hammamy, however, was the more accurate player, which proved decisive as she took the opener 11-7.

Kennedy’s accuracy improved in the second game, as the Englishwoman began to test El Hammamy’s defences.

The Egyptian passed the tests with flying colours, though, doubling her lead with an 11-9 win before bringing the match to a close – after a brief wobble – with a 12-10 win in game three.

Afterwards, El Hammamy said: “It’s always tough playing against Gina, we’re both physical players and playing in the heat outside is tricky for both of us. Whoever gets the length better is the one finishing the rally more and attacking more.

“I tried as much as I can to find my length and shots at the back of the court. It was tough, she kept coming back even when I got the lead in the last two games. I think I’m very pleased with the errors she made in the last game, I was very lucky!

“I think I felt good on court, even when I lost my rhythm and momentum in the last game, I still thought I was doing fine and was confident. I’ve been trying to find the rhythm in the off-season and I’m pleased with my flow on court!

“I’m the defending champion, but that was in front of the pyramids. It’s not at the pyramids anymore so it doesn’t feel like I’m defending a title. It’s a different venue and atmosphere, but I feel good. I’m happy playing in front of my team and family, so hopefully no pressure!”
