City Tattersalls Group Australian Open 2024 Semi Final: Rising Star Orfi Reaches Fourth World Tour Final

23 March 2024

Rising Egyptian star Amina Orfi is into the final of a PSA World Tour event for the fourth time in her fledgling career after overcoming Tomato Ho 3-1.

16-year-old Orfi, who was crowned World Junior Champion in Australia last year, has won one of the three previous finals she’s featured in and the young Egyptian has another tilt at a title at her first Australian Open.

Hong Kong No.1 Ho struggled to find consistency in the opening game as Orfi converted game ball at the first attempt.

A much improved performance in the second from Ho saw her 8-7 up, but Orfi didn’t panic as she continued to apply the pressure and keep the pace high, which put her back in front and she went on to double her lead.

The low error count from Orfi was pivotal in going two games up, with too many flowing from Ho’s racket. However she stepped up the court to attack the ball early in the third, which was rewarded with her halving the deficit after winning 11-9.

But Orfi was back on the front foot in the fourth – storming into a comfortable lead as Ho struggled with Orfi’s accuracy, with the Egyptian clinching the game 11-2.

“I feel so happy to make it to the final,” she said.

“It was a different match for me and a different game plan to usual. Most of the players on Tour run and they hit hard, whereas she [Tomato Ho] plays a bit of a calmer game so it was a bit different but I’m happy to get through.

“I knew my mistakes in the third so when I went into the fourth I wanted to have a good start so I could dominate the game and choose my shots my clearly.”

Result:
[2] Amina Orfi (EGY) bt [4] Tomato Ho (HKG) 3-1: 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 11-2 (49m)
