Canadian Women’s Open Day Two: Afternoon Roundup

28 March 2023

Olivia Clyne continued her impeccable recent form to breeze past Canada’s Nicole Bunyan on the afternoon session on day two of the Canadian Open.

In a brutal first game, Clyne took the game to the Canadian No.3, with her shot selection immaculate and giving Bunyan few opportunities, with Clyne going 1-0 up with an 11-4 win.

World No.13 Clyne – who has been playing some of her best squash in 2023 having reached three World Tour finals – continued to pile the pressure on the World No.47, taking the second game 11-5 and the third 11-4 to progress.

Afterwards, Clyne said: “I think there’s nothing quite like a venue like this. You get so inspired and you want to perform. I thought my shots weren’t terrible – I don’t know if they impressed you guys,  I may need to bring out some more stuff!

“I turn 30 in January and I definitely had a big ‘come to Jesus’ moment when I thought ‘Hey, are we going to get going or what?’ and I revamped a few things and honestly, I returned to loving this and walking onto court thinking ‘how cool is this, how cool is my life?’

In the other match on the glass court, USA’s Sabrina Sobhy made a rapid start to her Canadian Open campaign with a 3-0 victory over Canadian-Egyptian Zeina Zein.

On the court at the Toronto Athletic Club, Welsh No.7 seed Emily Whitlock fought back from two games down to beat Egyptian World No.63 Nardine Garas, while Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam continued her return to full sharpness with an impressive 3-0 win against Switzerland’s Cindy Merlo.

The evening session of the Canadian Women’s Open is underway right now, with four matches taking place on the glass court in the stunning Allen Lambert Galleria.
