Canadian Men’s Open QF: Farkas Stuns Steinmann

6 March 2024

Farkas Balazs continued his spectacular run at the Canadian Men’s Open Presented by AirSprint Private Aviation as he took down No.7 seed Dimitri Steinmann to reach a first ever PSA World Tour semi-final.

The unseeded World No.53, who yesterday shocked No.4 seed Abdulla Al Tamimi, put in a composed performance at Calgary’s Bow Valley Club to earn a 3-0 win to continue his giant-killing run.

The Hungarian No.1, who is yet to drop a game across his three matches so far in Calgary, took the game to the Swiss No.2 in the opening game, firing in winners to the delight of the crowd on the way to an 11-6 win.

Steinmann appeared to have settled early in game two, only for Farkas to accelerate away from 7-7 to 11-7 to double his advantage.

Farkas appeared to be tiring in game three as Steinmann looked to play lengthy rallies.

The Hungarian, however, clung on desperately, and converted his first match ball with a deft touch after a brutal 90-second rally.

Afterwards, Farkas said: “It’s a really good feeling. I’m really happy. I’ve been through this big battle and Dimitri played really well and really fair. He’s a good friend.

“For me, it doesn’t matter if it’s the first rally or the last, if I see a really good opportunity to play a shot I’m going to do it.

“I’m just so happy it didn’t go down to the tin – it was really close!”
