Asal Back Inside the Top Four in PSA Men’s World Rankings

15 January 2024

Egypt’s Mostafa Asal has overtaken England’s Mohamed ElShorbagy to return to the top four of the PSA Men’s World Rankings after he captured the SmartCentres Kinetic Florida Open title last night.

Here’s our look at the most notable movers of the week, as of Monday January 15.

Mostafa Asal

New Ranking: No.4

Previous Ranking: No.5

Asal collected the first PSA World Tour title of 2024 – and his first of the season – after overcoming compatriot Mazen Hesham by a 3-1 margin at the Kinetic Indoor Racquet Club Florida on Boynton Beach.

He beat ElShorbagy in the semi-finals, and capturing his 13th PSA title has seen him overtake the former World No.1 to sit at No.4 on the rankings.

Marwan ElShorbagy

New Ranking: No.8

Previous Ranking: No.9

ElShorbagy’s younger brother Marwan has risen a place to No.8, with Egypt’s Tarek Momen going the other way.

Momen’s rankings divisor has gone up to 12 after the Florida Open took his number of events played over the past 12 months to 16, and his quarter-final finish wasn’t enough to keep him ahead of ElShorbagy.

New Ranking: No.16

Previous Ranking: No.17

Egypt’s Mohamed ElSherbini appeared in the last 16 of the Florida Open but went down to France’s Gregoire Marche in a narrow 3-2 loss.

He is still rewarded with a one-place increase to his ranking, overtaking Aly Abou Eleinen.

Nicolas Mueller

New Ranking: No.20

Previous Ranking: No.21

Switzerland’s Nicolas Mueller replaces Spain’s Iker Pajares in the top 20.

Despite not lining up in Florida, Mueller’s points for last year’s Houston Open expired, meaning his rankings divisor dropped from 12 to 11. This saw his points average come up to 330.909, enabling him to overtake Pajares in this week’s rankings.
