Windsor City Open: Round One Complete In Windsor

Round one of the Windsor City Open concluded yesterday in both the Men’s Challenger 5 and Women’s Challenger 10 with 12 matches taking place to decide which players would be moving through to join the top seeds in round two.

There were no upsets in the men’s draw as five Canadians made their way through to the next round. Jayden Shortt came through the closest match of the day as he overcame compatriot and one of four event wildcards Daniel Malek, winning 11-9 in the fifth game. He’ll now face another compatriot in round two, in the form of No.6 seed Mitchell Kahnert.

Japan’s Jason Sano Herring was another player to win in five games as he went the distance with another wildcard Vishaal Mehta. Herring led 2-1 after winning game three 11-9 but was pegged back to 2-2 as Mehta won a comfortable fourth game 11-5. The Japanese player regrouped however to win 11-7 in the decider to advance to round two.

The women’s event featured just four matches on day one due to withdrawals, with two home players coming through to reach round two. Sara Khan needed four games to overcome compatriot Ananya Maheshwari. She is set to face USA’s Lucie Stefanoni in the next round. Catherine Giachino was the only home upset as she needed just 18 minutes to defeat USA’s Arisha Jahan Khan.

There were also day one wins for USA duo Ava Lin and Lara Varma, who overcame Canadian pair Iman Shaheen and Hannah Guthrie in four and three games to book their places in the next round.
