Sutton Coldfield RD2: MacGregor Downs Top Seed

England’s Stuart MacGregor caused the major upset on day two in Sutton Coldfield, as he overcame top seed Lwamba Chileshe to make the quarter finals.

MacGregor defeated Polish No.1 Filip Jarota on the opening day to set up a clash with the top seed, and he was in great form once again. The Englishman claimed the opening game 11-3, before seeing the Kiwi, fight back to take the second and level the contest.

The third game was crucial in the contest, and after a tie-break in which both men had their chances, it was MacGregor who took it 13-11, before going on to win the fourth 1-9 as well to secure a surprise victory, and to set up a clash with Welshman Elliott Morris Devred.

The other seeding upset in the men’s event saw Scotland’s Alasdair Prott get the better of No.8 seed Owain Taylor. The Scot won in straight games in just half an hour, winning 11-6, 11-4, 11-9 to book his spot in the quarter finals.

In the women’s draw, reigning World Junior Champion Amina Orfi downed Malaysia’s No.5 seed Yasshmita Jadishkumar in straight games, dropping just 11 points in the process. The 15-year-old Egyptian, who claimed her maiden Tour title last week in India, won 11-2, 11-3, 11-6 to make her way into the last eight.

She is joined by compatriot Hana Ismail, who defied England’s Kiera Marshall in three. The first couple of games were both tight, but the Egyptian came through them both to hold a 2-0 lead, before then winning the third game 11-2 to secure the victory.
