Sutton Coldfield RD1: Wildcard Salter Scores Upset To Reach Last 16

Two upsets took place on day one of the Sutton Coldfield International as wildcard Will Salter and Wales’ Chloe Foster overcame seeds Joel Arscott and Jasmin Kalar to advance to the Challenger 5 second round.

Birmingham based Salter is ranked 47 places below New Zealand’s Joel Arscott but after losing the first game 12-10, battled back to take the next three games 11-8, 11-2, 11-8 and secure his place in RD2, scoring the only upset in the men’s draw. He’ll take on compatriot and no.4 seed James Peach for a spot in the quarter finals.

Elsewhere in the men’s draw, Irish trio: Sean Conroy, Sam Buckley and Conor Moran all secured places in the second round after they overcame Baptiste Bouin, Abdallah Eissa and Toby Ponting respectively.

Only one upset took place in the women’s draw as well as Wales’ Chloe Foster overcame Jamsin Kalar to advance to the second round. With the scores level at 1-1, it was Foster who closed out a crucial third game 11-9 to take the lead in the contest before securing the win in four games, winning 11-6. She’ll now take on Finalnd’s No.7 seed Emilia Korhonen in the last 16.

Foster’s compatriot Lowri Roberts also made it through to the last 16 but didn’t have things all her own way as she was pushed all the way to five games by English junior Olivia Besant. Roberts had to battle from 2-1 down in the match to take the victory but comfortably won the fourth and fifth games 11-5, 11-6 to win in just over 40 minutes. She’ll now take on No.4 seed Asia Harris in the last 16.
