Sutton Coldfield International: Tournament Preview

28 November 2022

The Sutton Coldfield International returns to the calendar for its seventh edition this week, with the Challenger 5 level competition beginning on Wednesday, November 30.

Belgium’s Jan van der Herrewegen has been by far the most successful player at this tournament over the years, notching up four of the six men’s titles, including a run of three consecutive victories from 2015-2017. Victor Crouin and Sam Todd are the other men to be successful in Sutton Coldfield, while Alicia Mead won the inaugural women’s event in 2021.

This year’s edition of the competition will feature both a men’s and women’s Challenger 5 level draw, and New Zealand’s Lwamba Chileshe will be the top seed in the former. He will be joined by younger brother Temwa in the draw, while compatriots Joel Arscott and Kaitlyn Watts will also feature this week.

England’s Simon Herbert, James Peach and Ben Smith, along with the Welsh trio of Emyr Evans, Elliott Morris Devred and Owain Taylor will make up the rest of the seeds in the men’s event, joining the Chileshe siblings.

Englishwoman Anna Kimberley will be the top seed on home soil in the women’s event, with compatriot Asia Harris and Scotland’s Alison Thomson joining New Zealand’s Watts among the top four seeds.

Malaysia’s Yasshmita Jadishkumar, England’s Kiera Marshall, Scotland’s Katriona Allen and Finnish No.2 Emilia Korhonen will also be seeded for the Challenger 5 level competition. World Junior Champion Amina Orfi, who claimed her maiden Tour title at the 4th HCL SRFI Indian Tour – Jodhpur Leg last week, will also be in the field.

The event takes place from Wednesday, November 30 to Sunday, December 4 at the Sutton Coldfield Squash Club. Follow the PSA Challenger Tour on Twitter and Facebook for daily updates from the event. You can also keep up to date with live scores from Sutton Coldfield here.
